Liquid Nitrogen

Supagas supplies liquid nitrogen (LN₂) in a wide range of formats, from portable Dewars to bulk cryogenic tanks. With its extremely low boiling point of –196°C, liquid nitrogen is ideal for applications requiring cooling, freezing, preservation, or controlled atmospheres.

Liquid Nitrogen - What Is Liquid Nitrogen

What Is Liquid Nitrogen?

Liquid nitrogen is nitrogen gas that has been cooled and condensed into a liquid state. It is colourless, odourless and inert, making it suitable for applications requiring extreme cold without chemical reactivity.

Liquid nitrogen is valued for its:

  • Extremely low temperature

  • Fast cooling and freezing capability

  • Inert, non-flammable properties

  • Clean evaporation with no residue

Liquid Nitrogen - Liquid Nitrogen Applications

Liquid Nitrogen Applications

Supagas liquid nitrogen is used across a wide range of industries, including:

Industrial & Manufacturing

  • Shrink fitting and assembly

  • Metal treatment and cooling

  • Inerting and purging

  • Controlled temperature processes

Food & Beverage

  • Rapid freezing and chilling

  • Portion control and cryogenic grinding

  • Cold chain and transport cooling

Scientific & Laboratory

  • Sample preservation

  • Cryogenic storage

  • Research and testing environments

Medical & Healthcare

  • Cryotherapy

  • Cryopreservation

  • Medical and laboratory support applications

Other Commercial Applications

  • Cold treatment processes

  • Specialist cooling applications

Liquid Nitrogen - Safety and Handling of Liquid Nitrogen

Safety and Handling of Liquid Nitrogen

Liquid nitrogen is an extremely cold, inert cryogenic liquid and must be handled with care. When used correctly, it is safe and effective across a wide range of industrial, food, scientific and manufacturing applications. Understanding the risks, and how to manage them, is essential.

Extreme Cold (Cryogenic Hazard)

Liquid nitrogen boils at –196°C, which means direct contact can cause severe cold burns or frostbite almost instantly. Even brief exposure to splashes, vapour or cold surfaces can damage skin and eyes.

Key precautions include:

  • Wearing appropriate cryogenic PPE, including insulated gloves, face shields or safety goggles, long sleeves and closed footwear

  • Never allowing liquid nitrogen to contact bare skin

  • Using approved cryogenic containers and transfer equipment only

Asphyxiation Risk

Nitrogen is colourless, odourless and non-toxic — but it displaces oxygen. In enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces, nitrogen vapour can reduce oxygen levels without warning, creating a serious asphyxiation hazard.

To reduce risk:

  • Always use liquid nitrogen in well-ventilated areas

  • Never store or dispense in confined spaces without proper controls

  • Ensure oxygen monitoring is in place where required

Storage & Transport

Liquid nitrogen must be stored and transported in approved cryogenic dewars or tanks designed to manage extreme cold and gas expansion safely.

Safe storage guidelines:

  • Store upright on stable surfaces

  • Keep away from heat sources and ignition points

  • Clearly label containers and restrict access to trained personnel

Training & Procedures

Anyone handling liquid nitrogen should be properly trained and familiar with safe operating procedures, emergency response actions and first aid for cryogenic exposure.

We recommend:

  • Site-specific risk assessments

  • Clear operating procedures and signage

  • Regular equipment inspections and staff refreshers

Supagas made the supply of medical oxygen to my family home a seamless and personal experience. It is a confronting medical undertaking for the uninitiated.
